A Lecture Series on Biomedical Research

The Stanford Explore Lecture Series is an exploratory series covering the basic fundamentals and current research areas represented by the five Institutes of the Stanford School of Medicine (Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Medicine, Regenerative and Stem Cell Medicine, and Cancer Biology) as well as research areas in Bioengineering and Genetics. Stanford graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will teach many of the lectures with some of the lectures taught by select Faculty. There will also be special seminars that will include topics such as health issues currently faced around the world.

Although the main focus of the series is didactic lectures similar to what students will be exposed to in college, students will also have opportunities to experience several hands-on demonstrations and simulation labs at Stanford. Furthermore, there will also be opportunities to participate in lunch discussions with college, graduate school and medical school students to learn about the application process as well as to learn about what their experiences have been like. The schedule is 9am-12pm daily (except on Mondays and Fridays—the session will end at 1pm including lunch that is provided). We encourage you to sign up for all 4 weeks but you may also sign up for just 1, 2 or 3 weeks.

Summer 2015 Program Dates: (All topics are covered during the week)
WEEK 1 (July 6-10): Immunology/Neuroscience
WEEK 2 (July 13-17): Stem Cell/Cardiovascular Medicine
WEEK 3 (July 20-24): Bioengineering/Bioinformatics/Genetics
WEEK 4 (July 27-31): Cancer Biology/Careers in Science and Medicine

Are you interested in science and math, but unsure what sort of jobs and careers are available for you after college? We can help you to find the answers.

This Summer's Explore lecture series includes a special feature

During this week, students will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from Stanford School of Medicine Faculty and Staff about career opportunities in various fields, how to get there, and what a typical day is like. Each day will feature engaging and interactive talks on different careers, and the program will cover some of the following topics:

  • Getting started--overviews of careers in science and medicine, how to decide on a career, gaining exposure to different fields and research in college, medical school/graduate school admissions.
  • Medical Specialties—Surgery, Orthopedics, Ob/Gyn, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Neuroscience, Psychiatry.
  • Health specialty careers--Physical Therapy, Occupational/speech
Therapy, Nursing, Dietician, Physician Assistant, Genetic Counseling, Pharmacist.
  • Science careers--Research, Bioinformatics, Biotech/pharmaceutical fields.

Special lunches will be held on Monday and Friday during which you will have the opportunity to speak, in small groups, with faculty, graduate students, med students and MD/PhD students to learn about the educational paths they have chosen, and to ask them questions.
