The Stanford Explore Lecture Series is an exploratory series covering the basic fundamentals and current research areas represented by the various research areas of the Stanford School of Medicine (Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Medicine, Regenerative and Stem Cell Medicine, Cancer Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics and Genetics). The lectures will be taught by Stanford Faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Although the main focus of the series is attending lectures similar to what students will be exposed to in college, students will also have opportunities to experience several hands-on demonstrations and simulation labs at Stanford. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to participate in lunch discussions with college, graduate school and medical school students to learn about the application process as well as to learn about what their experiences have been like. Students will be provided with a notebook, pen, bag and a course reader for optional background reading. No homework assignments will be given. The program dates are July 10-August 4, 2017 and the schedule is 9am-12pm daily (except on Fridays—the session will end at 1pm including lunch that is provided). We encourage you to sign up for all 4 weeks but you may also sign up for just 1, 2 or 3 weeks. The topics for each week can be found on the home page or registration page.
This program is geared for high school students (currently in 9th through 12th grade). We expect all students to have taken at least one year of high school biology. Students should also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a green card attending a high school in the U.S.
Students may sign up for one week at a time or for all 4 weeks of the lecture series. The fee for the series is $750 per week (2 weeks=$1,500, etc.). If you would like to register for all 4 weeks, the fee is $3000. On March 1st, 2016, the EXPLORE registration site will be open on our website, and we will have an online payment link available if you would like to pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) or you may also pay by check. Please be sure that you will be participating before you register online. PLEASE NOTE: If you decide to cancel your registration, the cancellation deadline is May 1st, 2017 and we cannot issue any refunds after this date.
FINANCIAL AID: Students who lack the means to pay course fees will be considered for partial or full scholarships. In order to be considered, please email the program for an application form (firstname.lastname@example.org). The aid will be based primarily on the household income (generally full scholarships are only considered for family income under $80,000). You will be notified of the decision within 1-2 weeks of the receipt of your application.
The program does not offer housing or transportation. This program is best suited for students who live in the Bay Area although it is open to all students. However, it is important to note that students and their families must arrange their own housing and transportation during the series. Students who are not from this area should stay with relatives or close family friends who can provide supervision during their time here. Please also note that finding temporary housing in this area is extremely difficult. There is also no supervision for the students after the lecture series ends at 12pm (on Fridays only the end time will be 1pm for an end of week lunch) so parents must be sure to arrange for their transportation and supervision.
If you are planning on driving and need a permit, you will need to indicate this on the registration form. We will send detailed email instructions in early June and you will be able to purchase a parking permit at the parking office. The cost is $31.25 for a permit that will cover the 4 weeks. Please be sure to indicate on the online Slideroom registration form if you will be requiring a parking permit as we will need to give the parking office a list of the names of students in the EXPLORE Series. A parking permit will not be needed if you are just being dropped off.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION/ATTENDANCE
A certificate of completion will be issued, but no Stanford course credits/units. Students are required to attend all days of the lecture series with the exception of a day or two for illness or for emergencies. There will be a daily sign-in sheet for the students.
